Safety, By Design

Joshua Hammerton, Co-founder of Enkin, takes a look at the advanced safety features you should be demanding from your dimming products.

Safety matters on the market critical considerations in any electrical installation, particularly as lighting systems become more complex. As a result, specifying products with integrated protection is essential, not only for compliance but also to reduce risk on-site, ensuring long-term reliability for customers.

Safety is at the centre of everything we do at Enkin. It’s engineered into the core of each product we create – from our intelligent dimmer modules to our smart lighting controls.

All our dimmers, like our DM250 Intelligent Multi-Way Dimmer and ZDM250 Zigbee Smart Dimmer, are designed with multiple layers of built-in protection to assist electricians installing and maintaining lighting systems.

Technological advancements are revolutionising our lives. From smart homes to electric vehicles, the world is becoming more accessible and more convenient.

However, dimming technology has been left behind in some aspects. Issues such as overheating, short circuits, malfunctions and compatibility problems, placing electricians and end users at risk.

A major concern of mine during my years on the tools was the safety of the dimmer modules I was asked to install. There were cases where products failed to protect circuits in the event of overload, with disastrous results.

Short circuit protection

One of the stand-out safety features across the Enkin range is the advanced built-in short circuit protection software.

This innovative technology automatically shuts down the system in the event of a detected fault. Once the issue is resolved, the system safely restores operation without requiring manual reset.

Overcurrent protection

Overload protection safeguards the dimmer modules, and its primary function is to prevent damage caused by excessive current flow.

When an electrical circuit experiences an overload, often due to high demand from connected devices or a fault in the system, our integrated software cuts off the power to protect the equipment.

Self-resettable thermal fuses

Thermal safety is another key feature of Enkin products.

Unlike traditional fuses, which require replacement after failure, our dimmers include self-resetting thermal protection that automatically manages temperature effectively within the module.

If internal temperatures exceed safe limits, the fuse cuts power to prevent overheating and potential fire hazards. Once temperatures stabilise, the fuse self-recovers, allowing normal operation without the need for manual intervention.

The need for manual fuse replacements

The need for manual fuse replacements while providing continuous protection in high-load environments is eliminated with Enkin’s advanced protection systems.

Designed with electricians in mind

As electrical installations evolve, the expectation for safety rises. Our advanced safety features set a new benchmark for safety-led innovation – bringing peace of mind for electricians on the tools and protection for end users.
