We’re delighted our co-founder Joshua is on the judging panel for the eFIXX 30 Under 30 Awards this year. Offering his expertise to recognise talented, young electricians making their mark in the industry. We’re proud to be involved and support the next generation build a career in the trade and gain a deeper understanding of how the industry is evolving.
From apprentice to founder
Joshua started his journey at 16-years-old going straight into an apprenticeship with a local electrician. Early on, he worked across a wide range of projects from big residential homes and new builds to major commercial sites like hospitals and law courts.
Those early years weren’t just about learning the technical side of the trade, Josh was developing resilience, attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
At 20, he moved to Cornwall and faced the challenge many young tradespeople experience, trying to find consistent work in a new place. It took time, but that period built resilience and independence. By 26, Josh went self-employed and began carving out his own path.

Frustration led to Enkin
Working on large, luxury property renovations Josh noticed a recurring issue, the products on the market didn’t meet the expectations of high-end clients. The projects needed bespoke lighting systems, precision finishes and reliable performance. But instead, the reality was:
- Long and unreliable lead times
- Poor-quality finishes on sockets and switches
- Outdated designs that didn’t match modern interiors
- Lighting controls and dimming systems that were limited or ineffective
For years these constant issues, created frustration. Time was wasted dealing with products that didn’t perform or look the way they should.
Out of that frustration, Enkin was born, creating better solutions, designed with electricians in mind, that work the way they’re supposed to.
A changing industry
The electrical industry has transformed rapidly. Over ten years ago, a single pendant light and a couple of sockets was the norm for most homes. Today, clients expect fully integrated systems lighting control, smart automation, heating systems and more.
On top of that, the industry is expanding into new and exciting areas, including:
- Renewable energy systems
- Off-grid installations
- Smart home and automation technology
- Infrastructure supporting AI and data systems
It’s a fast-moving, evolving space and attracting more young people. The opportunities are growing, and so is the earning potential.

Supporting young electricians matters more now than ever
With change happening so quickly, the early stages of an electrician’s career can feel overwhelming.
“I understand first-hand how important it is to support younger electricians in the business. The electrical world is changing so quickly, and we need to help them navigate that shift and make sure they’re set up to succeed. It’s not just about keeping up, it’s about preparing the next generation to lead.”

Looking ahead
Next year marks 20 years since Josh first started out as an electrician.
From a 16-year-old apprentice to founding Enkin, his journey reflects the reality of the trade… hard work, challenges, constant learning and ultimately, innovation. That journey is the foundation of Enkin today.
It’s also why we’re so committed to supporting the electricians coming through. The future of the industry depends on them, and we want to make sure they have the tools, knowledge and support to succeed.
